CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS : COMMON CORE WORK PROGRAMME

Summary

1. NHS MEL(1995)84 provided details of the common core work programme, which was introduced to help improve health and the quality, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of clinical care by providing the Service with advice and information on a small number of important clinical topics.

2. The new topics selected for inclusion in the common core work programme for 1997/1998 are:

  • Lung Cancer
  • Chest Pain
  • Dental Caries

3. The eight topics selected for 1996/1997 will be rolled forward to 1997/1998. These are:

  • Dementia
  • Schizophrenia
  • Acute Stroke
  • Hypertension with a Focus on the Elderly
  • Breast Cancer
  • Colerectal Cancer
  • Hip Fracture
  • Peptic Ulcer

4. Work on the preparation of clinical guidelines, notes for purchasers, etc on these topics is underway, and these will be issued to the Service as they are completed.

Action

5. A leaflet entitled "Clinical Effectiveness In The Scottish Health Service - Working To Improve Health And Clinical Care" is attached. It sets out the aims of the common core work programme and is designed to increase awareness and enhance the impact of the programme throughout the Scottish Health Service.

6. Health Boards, NHS Trusts and General Practitioners should note the common core work programme topics for 1997/1998.

7. Health Board General Managers are requested to circulate this MEL and the leaflet to all GPs in their area for information. Trust Chief Executives should arrange for the leaflet to be distributed widely to personnel throughout their respective Trusts. Sufficient copies of both documents will be forwarded to Boards and Trusts for these purposes.

Yours sincerely
