DEATH AND THE PROCURATOR FISCAL

Summary

1. This letter has been issued at the request of the Crown Office and attaches revised guidance on Death and the Procurator Fiscal. The guidance reminds Health Boards and NHS Trusts of the circumstances under which a report of a death should be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Action

2. Health Board General Managers are requested to circulate this letter and the guidance booklet to all GPs in their area. NHS Trust Chief Executives are asked to ensure wide distribution of this information as appropriate.

3. This notice should be read in conjunction with NHS MEL(1998)68 of 23 October 1998 which provides information about changes to the medical certificate of cause of death which is to be used in Scotland from 1 January 1999.
