AMENDMENT TO STARTING DAY FOR HOSPITAL MEDICAL AND DENTAL STAFF

Summary

1. MEL(1994)9 set out the requirement for induction courses, approved by the Postgraduate Dean, to be held for newly qualified hospital medical and dental staff. It also set out the starting dates for newly qualified Pre-Registration House Officers (PRHOs) from 1994 to 2003.

2. It has been brought to our attention that the dates listed will cause difficulties in 2001. The direction for the starting day for newly qualified PRHOs should be amended to read therefore "the Tuesday prior to the first Wednesday in August." A list of dates is detailed at Annex A.

Action

3. Health Boards and NHS Trusts should continue to prepare educationally approved induction courses for new PRHOs. Contracts should be prepared in accordance with the start dates mentioned above. The induction courses will constitute the start date for employment purposes.

4. Pre-registration employment will continue to be not less than 12 months.

5. Any queries about the pattern and content of the induction programmes should be addressed to the appropriate Postgraduate Dean.
